It runs on the wiper motor and the regenerative power supply of the notebook computer. [Alex] Scrolled his own circuit board with ATtiny25 to control the motor. This circuit converts the movement of the potentiometer into PWM, and controls the motor through the MOSFET. After the cutting is completed, the limit micro switch immediately cuts off the motor.

Compared with the circular saw, the advantage is that the cut is smaller (saving expensive materials). Saw blades can be manufactured at a lower price because the geometry is simpler and requires less material. Maybe you already have blades and sharpening tools because they are used for hand saws. Before diamond saw blades became common and affordable, gem saws (for cutting rock ikydn) were like this. The blade will be ordinary low-carbon steel, and there will be another mechanism to release a little grit into the cut during each stroke of the blade. As for the circular saw, it depends on the type. The abrasive saw is messy, noisy, and smells, which is a general fire hazard. Cold saws are great, they can machine finishes accurate to a few thousandths of an inch every time. Cheap saws like the Evolution saw run faster, produce hotter chips, and use no coolant.
